John Seely Hart (1810-1877) served as both principal and professor of "Moral, Mental and Political Science" at Central High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1842-1858. He is widely credited with turning the school from a mediocre institution to an exemplary one. Hart was a prolific author, writing many books on literature and the proper use of grammar.
